Monte Amiata Safari

A six-day hike between two magnificent castles in the unexplored Monte Amiata region of Southern Tuscany: from the hot springs at Bagno Vignoni, via ancient olive groves, a holy Etruscan mountain and the Orcia Valley, to the Brunello vineyards of the Maremma.

Day 1/ Arrival in Bagno Vignoni - Mon 23 Sept

Arrival in Bagno Vignoni. Chance to soak in the thermal hot springs before dinner at a local trattoria.

Day 2/ Bagno Vignoni to Castello di Potentino - Tue 24 Sept

We cross the Orcia River and climb through oak forests, then descend via farmlands to our lunch spot. In the afternoon we ascend with wide-ranging views to the spectacular Castello di Potentino where we stay for two nights, nestled among organic vineyards in a pristine valley on the slopes of the Monte Amiata.

Day 3/ Day at leisure and circular walk to Seggiano - Wed 25 Sept

Morning at leisure for independent exploration. Late morning hike to the nearby town of Seggiano for lunch at a local trattoria, and return on foot. Evening tasting of Potentino’s award-winning wines and cantina visit, followed by dinner at the castle.

Day 4/ Potentino to Castiglioncello Bandini - Thu 26 Sept

Today’s walk traverses the Ente and Zancona streams, climbing through chestnuts and olive groves to the hilltop towns of Montegiovi and Monticello - a superb trajectory. We overnight below Castiglioncello Bandini, with long views across the rolling Maremma hills. Accommodation is at a private farmhouse.

Day 5/ Castiglioncello Bandini to Castello di Argiano - Fri 27 Sept

We follow a ridge dropping steadily into the Orcia River valley. Having crossed the river we continue through Brunello-vineyards and woodland to the stunning Castello di Argiano where we stay for two nights - one of Montacino’s finest wine estates.

Day 6/ Day at leisure and circular walk to Sant’Angelo - Sat 28 Sept

Morning at leisure to enjoy Argiano’s dreamy castle and estate. Late morning hike to Sant’Angelo Scalo for lunch at a local trattoria. Evening wine-tasting of the phenomenal Sesti organic wines, followed by final dinner at Argiano.

Day 7/ Departure - Sun 29 Sept

Departure and onward travel.
