Monte Amiata Safari

A magnificent five-day hike in the unexplored Monte Amiata region of Southern Tuscany: from the hot springs at Bagno Vignoni, via ancient olive groves, a holy Etruscan mountain and the Orcia Valley, to the Brunello vineyards of the Maremma.

Group departure: 25 – 30 April 2023

Day 1/ Arrival in Bagno Vignoni

Arrival in Bagno Vignoni. Chance to soak in the thermal hot springs before dinner at a local trattoria.

Day 2/ Bagno Vignoni to Seggiano

We cross the Orcia River and climb through oak forests, then descend via farmlands to our lunch spot. In the afternoon we ascend with wide-ranging views towards Seggiano where we stay in a pristine valley on the slopes of the Monte Amiata.

Day 3/ Seggiano to Castiglioncello Bandini

Today’s walk traverses the Zancona stream, climbing through chestnuts and olive groves to the hilltop town of Monticello - a superb trajectory. We overnight below Castiglioncello Bandini, with long views across the rolling Maremma hills. Accommodation is at a private farmhouse.

Day 4/ Castiglioncello Bandini to Castello di Argiano

We follow a ridge dropping steadily into the Orcia River valley. Having crossed the river we continue through Brunello-vineyards and woodland to the stunning Castello di Argiano where we stay for two nights - one of Montalcino’s finest wine estates.

Day 5/ Day at leisure and circular walk to Sant’Angelo

Morning at leisure to enjoy Argiano’s dreamy castle and estate. Late morning hike to Sant’Angelo Scalo for lunch at a local trattoria. Evening wine-tasting of the phenomenal Sesti organic wines, followed by final dinner at Argiano.
